1. Check the registry: Find out if any are registered near you. In the United States and in other countries, convicted sex offenders are registered in publically available registries.  If you are in the US you can start with: http://www.sexualoffenders.com
   For international registries try: http://www.mako.org.au/sexoffenderregistries.html.
   
   These registries are not always up to date, and if you see that a sex offender is registered near you it does not necessarily mean that he (or she) actually lives there. Much the same way if none are registered near you, it does not mean that there are none. Additionally, these registries only refer to convicted sex offenders and off course do not provide information about people that were charged and are either still in process or were not convicted.
